On Monday (October 30th), Rachel’s primary physical therapist said, “I think your ready to take steps outside of the parallel bars.” With wide eyes and with what sounded much like a chuckle…Rachel Courageously agreed!
Nearly a half lap around the “nurses hub” (almost 100ft), Rachel walked with a therapist at each side! As I walked backward in front of her as a reminder to keep her head up and shoulders back, I thought of how many times I have said and/or heard the expression, “just keep putting one foot in front of the other.”
It takes courage to keep believing, to keep trying & to keep looking up…Rachel exemplifies courage!
We were also able to discover that Rachel is “seeing double”. During an occupational therapy session she consistently reached for to the side of the intended items. Her therapist then asked, “do you have double vision?” She replied calmly with a affirming nod.
This entire time since her surgery she has been overcoming this obstacle without expressing and forms of anger or agitation. She had no way to communicate this challenge, and yet has not refused to try to achieve the tasks requested of her. As you continue to pray specifically for her eyes, please pray for healing but also for effective assistance and therapy for her eyes.
Swallowing and all facets of her speech therapy continues to improve. All her muscles are getting stronger. Her trache site is healing well, and this morning Rachel held a cracker between her right thumb and forefinger and tossed it to feed “Jeffrey”, one of the Mallard ducks that lives at the pond in the healing garden at Brooks!
Lastly, we have been given another extension. Our new pending discharge date is November 22nd. It is difficult being away from home and I am certain Rachel is more eager than anyone to return. However, when the Dr’s asked if she would like to continue with the program, Rachel emphatically & courageously nodded her head, “Yes!”
“This is my instruction…Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you, wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
Blessings, & We are sincerely grateful,
Jeremy
